Council Member Hebert Sworn in as Newest Addition to the Victoria City Council

New Council Member Alvin Hebert was sworn in during the Feb. 22 City Council meeting. Hebert was appointed as the newest member of the Council during the Feb. 8 meeting.

Community Impact: The Victoria City Council is back to full strength with four Council Members and our Mayor.

Emerald Ash Borer Found in Neighboring City

The City is in year two of a ten-year plan to treat and/or replace public ash trees to protect public trees from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) insect. Recently, an EAB infestation was detected in a city east of Victoria.

Community Impact: In 2020, 7,695 total diameter at breast height inches of ash trees were protected in Victoria.  By protecting ash trees in 2020, 897,480 gallons of stormwater were intercepted by ash trees and released into the groundwater.

Extension of City Water and Sewer Services Planned

With the completion of the County Road 11 corridor study and the reconstruction of Marsh Lake Road, the City is finalizing the design to extend city sewer and water in the southern portion of the City. Next steps are to develop specifications for bids.  Construction of the utilities would be concurrent with development.

Community Impact: Extending city water and sewer services allows the City to continue to grow.  Victoria is projected to be the largest city in Carver County when fully built out.

Alvin Hebert Appointed Newest Member of City Council

The City Council appointed Alvin Hebert to its vacant Council Member seat after interviewing eight applicants. Hebert filled the vacant seat left open when Deb McMillan was sworn in as mayor in Jan. 2021.
City Impact: Hebert will be sworn in on Feb. 22 during the Regular Council Meeting — bringing the 2021 Victoria City Council back to full strength.

Legislative Priorities in Victoria

Council hosted county commissioners Matt Udermann and Tom Workman as well as our State legislative delegation – Sen. Coleman, and Reps. Boe and Nash – to talk about the City’s legislative priorities. Local control, reconstruction of 82nd street and open meeting all were all part of the discussion.
City Impact: During each legislative session, new bills and pressing topics arise at the forefront of conversation. To ensure that the needs of Victoria residents have a presence at the capital, City Council annually meets with our representatives.

Carver County Sheriff Discussed Contract Policing

The City of Victoria, along with all other cities in the county except for the City of Chaska, contract with Carver County to provide policing services.
City Impact: In Victoria, four deputies work rotating shifts to provide 24x7 coverage. The City pays just over a half million dollars annually for police services.

New Artwork Showcased in Council Chambers at City Hall

The City is in its second year partnering with local artist and Victoria resident Deb Zeller, who also owns Zeller Studio in Hopkins, to bring rotating art shows to City Hall. The current show features a local artist group called the Brush Pilots.
City Impact: Swing in and check out the art show any time City Hall is open. All artwork in the show is available for purchase.
